How-to Almond Milk

Almond milk is one of the most popular alternatives when it comes to plant-based milk, but store-bought milks aren’t necessary the healthiest option. Luckily for you, making your own almond milk is simple, quick and requires no funny ingredients. It’s also cheaper, and healthier because you can control what’s in it.
With the rise of plant-based diets, many are looking for an alternative to dairy.
Almond milk is one of the most popular alternatives when it comes to plant-based milk, but store-bought milks aren’t necessary the healthiest option. Luckily for you, making your own almond milk is simple, quick and requires no funny ingredients.
It’s also cheaper, and healthier because you can control what’s in it. This recipe is for everyone (unless you have a nut allergy!) whether you are plant-based, vegan, lactose intolerant or simply embarking on a journey to a healthier lifestyle.
STORE-BOUGHT VS HOMEMADE
The biggest advantage to making your own almond milk, is that you get to control (the quality and freshness of) the ingredients. It starts with two simple ingredients, almonds and water. If you have a sweet tooth, you can add the sweetener of your choice (Stevia, pitted dates, etc), and some spices for extra yumminess (nutmeg, cinnamon, turmeric+black pepper and a pinch of salt.).
Did you know that most of the store-bought almond milk contains approximately 2% almonds?
That’s right, you are not getting your money’s worth.
THE UGLY TRUTH OF STORE-BOUGHT NUT MILK
So what’s in it if their main ingredient makes up for less than 2% of the product?
Most companies sneak in scary ingredients like Cane Juice, Cane Sugar or Cane Syrup , MSG, Emulsifiers such as carrageenan, Xanthan and Guar Gum,(those are very hard for your stomach to digest and causes inflammation, digestive issues, and are also linked to weight gain, and much more that I will discuss with evidence-based sources in my next blog) and GMO.
Some will say that making your own almond milk isn’t worth the hassle, but frankly, almond milk is ridiculously easy to make ; you simply need to soak your almonds in water, drain, then mix it in a blender.
Others will say that it’s actually cheaper to simply buy it at the store because nuts are expensive. It can be true if you don’t buy in bulk; we get all of our nuts from Costco, so making our own milk ends up being cheaper. Also, like I mentioned earlier, most of the store bought milk contains less than 2% almonds anyways, so is it really cheaper to buy when you’re getting ripped off?
I have been experimenting with plant-based milk for a while now. I feel pretty confident that my recipe will make you ditch store-bought milks. Not only because my recipe is delightful, but it contains all the flavours and nutrients you’re looking for in a plant-based milk, with none of the crap that companies sneak in their products that could be causing health damages short and long-term.It’s also cheap, easy, and delicious.

*We also tested the recipe without the almond skin. The consistency is creamier overall and if you don’t want to strain the almond pulp, it is a better option, but not necessary.
* Step # 5 is optional, but highly recommended; I like to compare it to orange juice. ..Meaning, if you like your OJ with pulp, it’s not the end of the world if you skip this step. If you like your OJ pulp-free, definitely don’t skip this step!Either way, I highly recommend NOT SKIPPING IT, because it makes the texture creamier, and the taste a tiny bit less bitter.
*Also, I like to reuse the Almond Pulp by adding it to pancakes, pizza (yes, as a topping!), homemade icecream, smoothies, etc… but it’s totally up to you if you want to keep it or discard it! You do YOU! 🙂
